If you want to get a jump on the latest developments in machine intelligence, head down to where Manhattan’s Lower East Side borders Chinatown, a still-gritty but gentrifying neighborhood where hip coffee houses are springing up next to industrial-supply outlets and wholesale stores. The location, an area in the midst of transition and modernization, is a fitting spot for Fast Forward Labs, a startup founded to help companies innovate and compete using what founder and CEO Hilary Mason calls “recently possible” machine intelligence techniques and technology. Fast Forward Labs has an unusual business model. It produces quarterly reports on emerging—or what Mason calls “near future”—technology, builds prototypes to demonstrate the technology, and offers advisory services. The business is based on a subscription model: For an annual fee, clients get access to the reports and prototypes plus time with Mason and her colleagues, who guide them on how to apply the technology to their own businesses. “The role we play here is basically we’re their nerd best friend,” Mason says.

Intel has grand plans for computers that will recognize human emotion using its RealSense 3D camera, but Apple appears to have dealt it a setback. Netflix admitted Thursday to throttling video streams worldwide for its mobile users, but said it hasn’t been an issue for customers. The video streaming company plans to roll out to its members sometime in May a ‘data saver’ feature, allowing them greater control over their data usage when streaming on mobile networks. Users will then be able to “either stream more video under a smaller data plan, or increase their video quality if they have a higher data plan,” wrote Anne Marie Squeo, a spokeswoman for the company,

Strapping a pair of virtual-reality goggles to one’s face used to be the province of bad science fiction. Now, seemingly overnight, VR is here in the real world and dictating the future of the PC. Why? Customers and vendors alike instinctively understand how to use VR. And the price, while high, is within reach of most PC buyers. Just as importantly, content creators have seemingly embraced it, helping soothe concerns that VR will be just another product in search of a purpose, like 3D TV.
