Microsoft's Garage internal incubator has come out with a news feed on the iPhone targetting users' business information needs. The News Pro interface is fairly bare bones: it shows a list of articles that users can scroll through, comment on, and "like," similar to other news apps. Users can either read them as they would appear on the web, or in a streamlined "Speedy mode" that strips away everything but basic text.
There are times when Asus’s designs rival Apple’s. Indeed, anything with “Zen” in front of it at least attempts the feat, and the company’s Zen AiO Z240IC all-in-one has come close to capturing that iMac-like magic. Out of the box, we were impressed with this all-in-one’s attractive design and aluminum chassis. After firing up the Zen AiO we were doubly impressed. Apple would rattle on about “retina,” but in PC-land what you’re talking about is a 3840x2160 UHD resolution display (commonly known as 4K). The high density of the pixels makes everything super smooth-looking, and if you throw a UHD demo file at it… Yowser. If there were HDMI input, I’d say the Z240IC might make sense as a dorm-room entertainment center. As is, it’ll have to settle for close to perfect.

Microsoft is releasing the first technical preview of its Azure Stack private cloud platform on Friday, which will allow customers to bring capabilities from the Azure public cloud into their own data centers. Microsoft announced Azure Stack last spring at its Ignite conference, but it didn't offer many details about how the system would work. With this first technical preview, IT professionals and developers with powerful enough hardware will be able to spin up an Azure Stack instance and give it a shot themselves before Microsoft makes it generally available later this year. Azure Stack is an attempt to bring the utility of Microsoft Azure to customers’ data centers and expand its reach to regions of the globe that Microsoft's cloud service hasn't yet touched. Companies will be able to install it on compatible hardware and then use that to run a private instance of Microsoft Azure, using some of the same tools they’re used to working with in the public cloud.
Consumers should have the right to inspect the source code for connected devices they own, to ensure it doesn't contain bugs or backdoors, one U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner believes. As we connect our homes, our vehicles and our clothing to the Internet of Things, "We need to be very mindful of consumer data security and be very careful of anything that undermines that data security," said Commissioner Terrell McSweeny.
Google’s Inbox email client now makes it easier to find a needle in an email haystack with updates the company made Tuesday morning. Now, when users search for terms like “delta frequent flyer” and “dinner reservation,” Inbox will pull up cards that show users their frequent flyer numbers, details about their next reservation, and more. For users, that may take the place of the usual practice of digging through a list of search results, seeking one particular piece of information. Some of the cards Inbox by Google will show when users search for common terms

GoPro just announced a partnership so obvious it’s surprising it didn’t happen earlier. You can now live stream the epic tube rides you capture on your action camera via If you’re going into the water, however, you’d better get a waterproof case, because you’ll still need your iPhone close by. You need to connect your GoPro Hero 4 to your iPhone via Wi-Fi, and then set Periscope for iPhone to broadcast. Next, a GoPro button will be highlighted in the app; tap that and you’re live. GoPro’s new Periscope integration isn't available for Android.
Social networks love to cater to their more prominent users. Facebook, for example, creates What exactly constitutes a VIP is unclear, but the informal designation appears to factor in a person’s celebrity, tweet volume, and social reach. It’s likely those little blue verified check marks next to a user’s name are table stakes just to be considered for the ad-free experience.

Sony has reached an agreement to acquire chip company Altair Semiconductor in Israel for US$212 million in a bid to strengthen its offering for the Internet of Things market. Altair is a developer of modem chip technology and software relating to the LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G cellular standard for mobile phones and data terminals, which Sony aims to combine with its sensing technologies such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and image sensors to develop new cellular-connected, sensing devices. Sony expects LTE, which is already used in data communication for mobile phones, to play a key role in IoT as more and more small devices or “things” are expected to be equipped with cellular chipsets and access network services that take advantage of cloud computing.
In yesterday’s The Aerelight A1 is fabricated from a single piece of brushed aluminum and is available in three anodized finishes: Red, black, or silver. The company says it’s open to the idea of producing additional colors if there’s enough demand. A square of American walnut inset in the base accentuates the lamp’s good looks and delivers a bonus feature I’ll get to in a moment.
We've all loved to hate Microsoft's free Windows Defender software—it's been so mediocre that it's been considered the baseline metric in third-party tests. But recent independent tests show it's actually outperforming a number of third-party suites, some of which charge you money to use them. Results
