The rumored discussions are focused on the possibility of Time Warner investing $1.25 billion in Hulu in exchange for a 25-percent stake.

Huawei has developed a prototype smartphone battery that can be recharged to half its capacity in just five minutes. The battery is based on the same lithium ion chemistry used in cellphone batteries today but gets its advantage from atoms of graphite bonded to the anode, Huawei said on Friday at an industry conference in Japan. That change means faster charging but not at the expense of usage life or a sacrifice in the amount of energy that can be stored in each battery, it said. It was developed by Huawei research and development subsidiary Watt Lab and the company showed off two prototypes in videos posted online. One of the two batteries has a capacity of 3,000mAh (milliampere hours) -- about equivalent to the batteries in modern smartphones -- and

Smart cities could become healthier cities as the Internet of Things learns to gauge conditions from the sky to the sewer. Fledgling IoT teams working above and below ground came out for the Re.Work Connect Summit conference in San Francisco on Thursday. Both say they can help cities understand and anticipate things that affect human health. With smaller devices and smarter analytics, they're improving upon the systems that have been testing urban conditions for years. The so-called "smart cities" trend has generated a lot of attention for things like automated traffic, parking management and better transit, but urban life also has an underside of health dangers. For the Senseable City Lab at MIT, that side is found literally underground. Its Underworlds project is analyzing sewage for signs of diseases and poor health.

I love Twitter and its 140-character limit, but sometimes I have far more to say than can fit in the space of a few sentences. For those times, I usually turn to Facebook, write a blog post, or yell at my plants. As an alternative, some employ the infamous “tweetstorm” as popularized by venture capitalist and web browser pioneer Marc Andreesen. Tweetstorms are basically multiple tweets that go together to complete a single thought and are usually numbered. Typing tweetstorms into Twitter’s web interface or your typical mobile client is a pain since you can only type out one tweet at a time. That’s why it’s handy to know about two free web apps that make tweetstorming easier.

Does your tweeting turn off your followers? What followers?

Gene M. Amdahl, chief architect of IBM's System/360 mainframe and later the creator of the IBM plug-compatible mainframe vendor that bore his name, has died aged 92. Amdahl was born in South Dakota, earning a bachelor's degree in engineering physics at the state university in 1948. In 1950, as a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he and Charles H. Davidson designed a digital computer. In 1952, the year Amdahl received his doctorate in theoretical physics, the university began building the computer, the Wisconsin Integrally Synchronized Computer (WISC). However, Amdahl didn't stick around: In June that year, he joined IBM, where

The spate of cyberattacks against email providers is likely to pass with time as they refuse to pay ransoms. But that doesn't mean the attacks haven't cost them. Since early this month, the list of companies that have been attacked has grown longer: first ProtonMail of Switzerland, followed by HushMail, RunBox, VFEmail, Zoho and FastMail of Australia. The companies have typically received extortion requests by email asking for 10 or 20 bitcoins in exchange for not being subjected to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks involve sending a large amount of data traffic to a company's network, causing the service to choke and go offline.
