Researchers have found a new way to attack the SHA-1 hashing algorithm, still used to sign almost one in three SSL certificates that secure major websites, making it more urgent than ever to retire it, they said Thursday. SHA-1 is a cryptographic hashing function designed to produce a fingerprint of a document, making it easy to tell if a document has been modified after the fingerprint was calculated. Weaknesses had already been identified in SHA-1, and most modern Web browsers will no longer accept SSL certificates signed with it after Jan. 1, 2017. That date was chosen based on the ever-decreasing cost of the computing power required to attack the algorithm.

A bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday that will make it a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to a year, for individuals who knowingly operate a drone within 2 miles of a fire, an airport or any other restricted airspace. Introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California, the Safe Drone Act is one of a number of moves at the federal and state level that have been introduced in the wake of concerns about the risks from the reckless use of drones by enthusiasts, including dangers of possible collisions between rogue drones and traditional aircraft. While introducing the bill, Boxer said that people flying drones recklessly have forced firefighters to suspend air operations out of concern for the safety of the pilots and people on the ground, referring, for example, to an incident in San Bernardino County in California earlier this year, when drones apparently shooting videos disrupted firefighting operations.
Amazon.com has made a pitch for the handicrafts market occupied by players like Etsy by setting up its own "Handmade at Amazon" store. Perhaps reflecting the concern of some users that handcrafted items peddled online are often factory-made, Amazon is making a big deal about the artisans and the personalization offered on the products on On its store page, it invites customers to, for example, connect with the artisan through their profile page "and discover their personal story to feel confident your piece is genuinely made by hand." All products available on Handmade at Amazon are factory-free and must be made by hand, the company said Thursday. Over 80,000 handcrafted items from around the world are available on the store, and over 30 percent of these can be personalized by artisans, it added.
