Cloud gaming service OnLive said that the company will throw open its PlayPack vault in support of the Extra Life charity for 24 hours beginning Thursday, allowing gamers to play more than 250 games on the service for free. Although the effort clearly promotes OnLive’s own services, the company is also raising money for Basically, OnLive sells itself as a way to play graphically intensive games without paying hundreds of dollars for the latest hardware. OnLive offers two main subscriptions. CloudPlay, for $7.95 per month, allows gamers who buy a supported game via Valve Software’s Steam service, to play the game using OnLive’s network of dedicated game servers. A second service, PlayPack, lets gamers play an archive of more than 250 older games that include Saints’ Row: The Third and the first two games in the Batman Arkham series, for $9.95 per month. OnLive also quietly bundled the two into an OnLive Service Bundle for $12.95 per month about two weeks ago.
Worldwide PC shipments fell slightly in the third quarter this year, but the drop wasn’t as big as IDC had originally projected, with expanded offerings of inexpensive laptops and a saturation of tablets in some areas helping to improve the numbers, the tech industry research firm said Wednesday. Hardware makers shipped 78.5 million desktops and laptops during the third quarter, a 1.7 percent drop from a year ago, but a “sizable” improvement over IDC’s earlier forecast of a 4.1 percent drop. It found that nearly 70% of companies with 500 or more employees had already implemented or were expanding or upgrading their use of LAN IP-based voice services. Microsoft wants to promote the use of OneDrive for Business among Office 365 customers, so it’s building links between the work cloud storage service and Outlook Web App (OWA), the suite’s browser-based email interface. Over the coming weeks, Microsoft will roll out an option in OWA’s interface to attach OneDrive for Business URL links to messages, in addition to the conventional option of attaching files stored in the sender’s hard drive.
