Supercomputing speed is typically boosted by adding more processors, but two new systems funded by the National Science Foundation due to go live next January will take an unconventional approach to speed up calculations and data analysis. Arrays of memory and flash storage—totaling up to petabytes in storage—will be loaded on the Wrangler supercomputer at Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas at Austin and the Comet supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego. The supercomputers, which are currently under construction, have a new design with high levels of storage relative to the number of processors in the system.

The U.S. Congress needs to overhaul the take-down notice provision in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to make it easier for copyright holders to police infringing uploads of their intellectual property, some advocates told lawmakers. Copyright holders shouldn’t have to go back to a website and ask for repeat take-downs of the same file again and again, musician Maria Schneider told a House of Representatives subcommittee Thursday. The DMCA provision giving websites legal protections for the content users post puts too much of the burden for finding infringing uploads on copyright holders and not on operators of websites and services like YouTube, she said.

The developers of Replicant, a mobile OS based on Android, claim to have found a backdoor vulnerability in a software component shipped with some Samsung Galaxy devices that potentially provides remote access to users’ private files through the device modem. The problem is located in the proprietary library that handles communications between the Android OS and the firmware running on the modem chipset, also known as the baseband or radio processor. “This program is shipped with the Samsung Galaxy devices and makes it possible for the modem to read, write, and delete files on the phone’s storage,” said Replicant developer Paul Kocialkowski Wednesday in

Adobe Systems released a new security update for Shockwave Player in order to fix a critical vulnerability that could allow attackers to remotely take control of affected systems. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2014-0505, is the result of a memory corruption issue and can lead to arbitrary code execution. According to Adobe, the flaw was privately reported to the company and there are no reports of active exploits targeting it in the wild. Adobe recommends users of Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0.9.149 and earlier versions to update to the newly released version 12.1.0.150, which is available for Windows and Mac, the company said Thursday in a

The carrier plans to replace all its 2G/Edge coverage with LTE, and start rolling out LTE on 700MHz A-Block spectrum.

Connected cars are big at this year’s Cebit trade show, with driverless cars and products to communicate with the vehicle’ onboard computers on display, but cooler apps are needed for the sector to really take off. The first step on the connected car journey is getting cars hooked up to the Internet. While manufacturers have started integrating 4G mobile broadband, it will take a long time before a majority of cars have integrated mobile broadband connections. For people who can’t or don’t want to use their smartphone as a hotspot, Vodafone Germany has launched an LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot that’s powered by the car’s cigarette lighter. The operator has started an endurance test in Berlin, where selected taxi drivers are using the product, Vodafone said.

If you don’t need the family plan offered by Microsoft’s Office 365 Home Premium, relax—Microsoft announced an individual subscription on Thursday. Dubbed Office 365 Personal, the new Office subscription works with just a single computer (either a Mac or a PC) and a tablet. Instead of paying $9.99 per month ($99 per year) for Office 365 Home Premium, Microsoft is charging $6.99 per month, or $69.99 annually, for the Personal version. The new subscription option will arrive later this spring, Microsoft said. Microsoft will continue to offer Office 365 Home Premium, but will tighten the name to just Office 365 Home when the Personal Edition becomes available, the company said. The name change also reflects the fact that Office Home is, in fact, designed for a home, with licenses for up to 5 PCs or Macs, plus an additional 5 mobile devices such as phones or tablets. Office Personal, naturally, is for those without additional family members. Whether one chooses Office Personal or Office Home Premium, however, Microsoft will still offer them 60 minutes of free international Skype calls per month and 20 GB of OneDrive storage.

[ In the virtual world, potential danger lurks behind every URL. And that’s nothing compared to the dangers of the real world. The right equipment can protect you from both. You can find safety in both worlds with networked attached storage (NAS). The right NAS device can protect your privacy on the Internet and in your home. With networked-attached storage, you can connect hard drives and SSDs directly to your network, without going through a computer. The files on those drives are always available for people with the right to access them.

Evernote is considered the gold standard for note-taking apps, but for all its accolades most people barely tap into its capabilities.
