VMware will offer virtual desktop services for Google’s Chromebooks, allowing them to run Windows applications on the pared-down laptops based on the Chrome OS. Organizations could save as much as $5,000 per computer by using a combination of Chromebooks and VMware managed services, Google has estimated. VMware desktop virtualization could also provide organizations an easy way to migrate from Windows XP, "Many customers want to take advantage of thin client computing but want a bridge back to the old world where they can run Windows applications,” said Sanjay Poonen, VMware executive vice president and general manager of end user computing.

Toyota is recalling nearly 1.9 million Prius hybrid vehicles around the world in order to fix a software glitch that could damage transistors and cause a loss of power. Some 700,000 of the Priuses are in the U.S., according to a Toyota plans to tweak software in the Priuses for the motor/generator ECU (engine control unit) and the hybrid control ECU. The current settings “could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged,” Toyota said. “If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.”

The world’s love affair with the smartphone continued unabated in 2013 with consumers snapping up more than 1 billion handsets during the year, according to an IDC estimate published on Wednesday. In 2012, total shipments were 725 million phones, so last year saw an additional 275 million smartphones sold—a jump of 39 percent over 2012. “I think there is still some energy to be had,” said Ramon Llamas, one of the IDC analysts who worked on the report. “Last year we saw pretty similar growth. The suspects allegedly had used Black Market Reloaded for dealing in drugs and weapons, it added.
