The takeaway from recent revelations of widespread NSA spying is even the best security software is unlikely to keep out elite hackers. One frequently offered defense is to use a separate PC to access the Internet, but that’s hardly practical. So short of disconnecting your computer, how can you protect yourself? Thanks to the low price of RAM and availability of fast solid-state drives (SSDs), an increasingly appealing solution is to set up a virtual machine (VM) just for working with emails and browsing the Internet. This requires less hassle but offers heightened security by accessing the two likeliest attack vectors from what is effectively a security sandbox. Here’s how to set up your own VM. There are a number of virtualization products available for PC users. If budget is your main concern, is free for personal non-commercial use. If you use Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise, you can also take advantage of Hyper-V virtual machine manager. It isn’t installed by default, though, so you will need to go to Control Panel, Programs, and Programs and Features. Click on Turn Windows Features on or off, and select the checkbox under Hyper-V. A system restart is necessary to complete the installation. Users of Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise can install Hyper-V virtual machine manager from the Control Panel.
Apple is selling a 4K monitor from Sharp that could allay concerns of users looking to buy the upcoming Mac Pro desktop for ultra-high definition content creation. Sharp’s PN-K321 4K Ultra HD LED monitor, which displays images at a 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution, is for €3,999 (US$5,444) through Apple’s U.K. and other European online stores. The monitor is not yet listed on Apple’s U.S. online store. Some TVs and monitors already support 4K, the successor to current high-definition specifications in which images are displayed at a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. This Sharp monitor shows “four full HD screens on a single seamless display,” according to the product description on the website. Apple this month will ship the Mac Pro high-end desktop, which is largely aimed at creative professionals and engineers. The desktop has multiple graphics cards that will allow the creation of 4K content. Some buyers looking to pick up the new Mac Pro about the lack of a 4K display from Apple.
Microsoft said Friday that next week it will finally issue a patch for a vulnerability within its Microsoft Graphics (GDI+) component, one that is being actively targeted by attackers. However, it will not patch a Friday. In all, the patches will be released on Dec. 10, at about 10 AM PT, Microsoft said. The GDI+ vulnerability has been known about for at least a month; in November, Microsoft first began publishing . It affects the following software: “If the attachment is opened or previewed, it attempts to exploit the vulnerability using a malformed graphics (TIFF) image embedded in the document," Microsoft says. "An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged on user.”
Microsoft has quietly ended retail sales of Windows 7 licenses, according to a notice on its website. The company’s policies for shutting off sales to retailers and shipping licenses to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are , which was recently updated to show that Windows 7’s “retail end of sales” date was Oct. 30. You’ve got a lot of valuable things stashed on your computer. Some of them—like your music library—are deeply personal. Others—tax returns and business documents—are more mundane, but still important to keep around. And then there are things like photos that are simply irreplaceable should your computer’s hard drive suddenly give up the ghost. If putting together a is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, maybe a backup device should be on your holiday wishlist. But what device is appropriate for your needs? You can narrow down the search just by answering a few quick questions. Do you need to backup just one computer or an entire household of machines? If it’s just you, an external desktop drive may be the best choice. Look for a drive with a capacity higher than that of the computer you’re backing up. I recommend at least twice the capacity of your internal drive, if possible. Multi-computer households or offices should look into network attached storage options. We’ll examine both choices below. Most desktop backup devices use rotational hard drives, generally 7,200-RPM drives that require an external power supply. These hard drives aren’t as fast as solid state drives, but they offer much higher capacities and lower prices. Speed isn’t as important as capacity, especially when performing incremental backups. Most connect to your PC via USB 3.0, though eSATA and Thunderbolt drives are available.
Sometimes it seems there are more social network managers than social networks to manage. With big names such as We all know the importance of visuals in social media feeds, and Symphony makes it very easy to create image updates. The Crosspost tool—where you compose updates—lets you easily add images from your computer, Dropbox, or the Web. The built-in image search makes sure you only find public domain or creative commons images, and the built-in Aviary image editor lets you touch up any image to perfection. When posting links, Symphony can extract images from them with one click, creating image-oriented updates that jump out. The automatic link shortener wraps everything up in a neat package. Unfortunately, this is Symphony’s only real selling point. Symphony comes in three price plans, with the seven-day free trial showing only the cheapest of the three. To start using Symphony, you must log in with your Facebook account. Once you do, don’t try to add Facebook Pages you manage under different accounts. This creates a whole different user for you, and you cannot manage two Facebook accounts under one user. You can bypass this with team collaboration—but that option’s not available in Symphony’s cheapest $14/month plan. If you own a blog, or love to share posts from others’ blogs, all plans include blog syndication. Add a blog to Symphony (must include RSS or Atom feed URL), and automatically send any new posts to any of your connected social accounts. These posts are also available to you when composing updates; click the RSS icon to choose a post from your blog to share, and make it pop by using Symphony’s image tools. Symphony brings some nice ideas to the table, and I would gladly use its image posting options in my job every day. The rest of the system, however, is just not good enough, especially when ones such as HootSuite are available for free. Symphony might not be the most expensive option out there, but it’s not the best one either. To be worth $14, $29, or $99 per month, Symphony needs to offer a better product, and not just a really cool feature wrapped in a less-than-ideal package. When that happens, it will definitely be worth the money.
Miniature tablets are becoming more and more popular, with devices like Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini in the vanguard. Acer tried to bring Windows to the mini form with its earlier this year, but that tablet was hampered by an awful screen, a bulky chassis, and a slow processor. But it looks as though Intel’s new quad-core Atom processor, formerly codenamed Bay Trail, has what it takes to make Windows a worthy tablet operating system. Dell’s Venue 8 Pro is equipped with an Atom Z3740D CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage, and it runs the full version of Windows 8.1. The OS takes up quite a bit of that storage, leaving you with a little over 12GB of free space out of the box. Bumping up to the 64GB Venue 8 Pro adds $50 to the price tag, or you can supplement that storage with a MicroSD card. The Venue Pro’s 8-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels—that’s a far cry from the 1080p resolution of tablets such as the more laptop-like , and it’s even farther from the iPad mini with a 2048-by-1536-pixel Retina display. But text and images look great on the Venue Pro’s bright IPS display—or at least the Venue Pro’s display .
