Yahoo has acquired LookFlow, an image recognition company, as part of a plan to improve photo discovery on Flickr, Yahoo announced Wednesday. LookFlow’s technology uses machine learning to help people find and explore images. It’s a goal shared by the team at Yahoo’s Flickr photo-sharing service, LookFlow on its website. Five engineers at LookFlow—and the technology they built—will be brought to Yahoo’s Flickr business in San Francisco, a Yahoo spokeswoman said in an email. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. LookFlow’s product will be incorporated into a future version of Flickr, LookFlow said. The company said it will also help Yahoo build a new “deep learning group.”

AT&T posted gains in revenue and net income for the third quarter of 2013, with gains in mobile phone and U-verse TV subscribers driving the growth. AT&T on Wednesday reported revenue of $32.2 billion for the third quarter, a 2.2 percent increase from the third quarter of 2012. Net income was $3.8 billion, up 4.9 percent. Earnings per share was 66 cents, beating analyst expectations by one cent. “There is a lot we really like about the quarter,” said John Stephens, AT&T’s CFO. AT&T’s efforts to expand its 4G mobile services and shift its voice network to IP, announced in November 2012, are paying off, he said during a conference call. Even after large additions of U-verse TV and broadband customers, there’s more room for growth as AT&T expands its broadband network and increases speeds in many areas, he said.

Communications chipmaker Broadcom is cutting approximately 1,150 jobs, nearly one-tenth of its workforce, as part of a global restructuring. The company announced the cuts Tuesday as it reported third-quarter revenue that was nearly flat from last year’s third quarter, at $2.15 billion. That was up just 0.8 percent from $2.13 billion a year earlier. The company also posted net income of $316 million, compared with a loss of $251 million in last year’s third quarter. Broadcom said the restructuring, which its board approved on Sept. 25, is aimed at cutting costs as well as better focusing the company’s spending on key initiatives. The cost-cutting also includes lease terminations, the company said. The layoffs will include about 350 employees that Broadcom took on through its acquisition of LTE chip technology from Renesas Electronics, which was completed on Oct. 1. As many as 425 Broadcom workers will also be cut because their jobs became redundant after Renesas was absorbed into the company.

This is a review by a man named Hayden. Hayden worked for a company in a big building where he was employee number…he didn’t know. The company had lost count. Hayden’s job was simple. He sat at his desk and pushed buttons on a keyboard. These buttons made articles. Sometimes, these articles were about video games. Hayden played many video games. Some he liked. Most he felt ambivalent about. Companies kept releasing games though, so Hayden kept playing them. This is what Hayden did every day of every month of every year, and though others might have considered it a gigantic waste of time, Hayden sometimes enjoyed it. He pressed the buttons. He moved the mouse. The game, actually thousands of lines of code, reacted to what Hayden did. Sometimes Hayden won the game. Other times the computer outsmarted his weak brain and he lost. . Not that guns and story are necessarily mutually exclusive but…

U.S. intelligence agencies may have spied on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone, which would be a “grave breach of trust,” the German government said late Wednesday. . Seibert didn’t disclose how the German government received information about the surveillance. Merkel, in a phone call with U.S. President Barack Obama, said such surveillance would be “completely unacceptable,” the statement said. Merkel told Obama she expects U.S. authorities to detail the scope of monitoring practices in Germany, Seibert said.

As Apple vice president Craig Federighi declared OS X Mavericks would be a free upgrade, an image of a boxed copy of Windows 8 Pro flashed on the screen behind him, next to a $199 price tag. "Today we're going to revolutionize pricing," Federighi said. Hold on there a second, Craig. While the low, low cost of $0 for Mavericks is certainly a welcome change from the (entirely reasonable) cost of past OS X upgrades, it's not quite as revolutionary as Apple claims. Mobile operating systems have been free for years, and long before Apple's Tuesday announcement, Microsoft made Windows 8.1 a free upgrade for Windows 8 users. But there's more to Apple’s strategy than price alone: Mavericks could very well offer a glimpse into the future of Windows, now that Microsoft has reimagined itself as a device and services company. is Apple's letting everyone from 2009's OS X Snow Leopard on up make the upgrade without any financial burden whatsoever.

New patent reform legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday aims to make it more difficult for so-called patent trolls to file infringement lawsuits. filed by patent-licensing firms, and several trade groups, along with digital rights groups Public Knowledge and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, praised Goodlatte’s bill. The bill’s several provisions will “really help put an end to this dangerous business model that threatens us all,” said Julie Samuels, an EFF senior staff attorney.”Taken together, what they will do is make that business model a less attractive business model.” The bill would require companies suing for patent infringement to identify the patents and claims infringed in their initial court pleadings, potentially making it more difficult for patent holders to file broad infringement claims. The legislation would also require patent holders filing lawsuits to disclose what groups have financial interest in the patent, and it would allow manufacturers of a product to intervene in a patent lawsuit against its customers, in an effort to reduce a growing number of patent lawsuits against users of technologies that allegedly infringe patents.

Wolf Among Us, the new episodic game from Telltale, is just as good as the studio’s award-winning Walking Dead series. Yeah, I didn’t think it was possible either.

If your father was anything like mine (and a quick unofficial office poll concludes I am not alone here), then you were constantly chided, scolded, nagged, and admonished to sit up straight. And what was the end result of all the efforts to get us to protect our backs with correct posture? Thousands of slouchers hunched over glowing laptops for hours on end. Sure, you try to make sure your office chair has good ergonomics, or that you’re sitting correctly on the bus, but the rest of the time you’re a dirty sloucher like the rest of us and you know it. But LUMOback has your back. LUMOback wants to help. A sensor that is strapped around the waist (under or over the clothes), LUMOback gives you gentle reminders, in the form of a buzz, to correct your posture throughout the day. It can also track how many steps you walk, how often you stand throughout the day, and even your sleep position if you wear it at night. And starting today, you can grab one at your , as LUMOback is expanding its retail reach. The LUMOback’s buzzing can be set to buzz once when you enter a bad posture position, or if you put it in pulse mode, it'll keep buzzing until you move into a good posture position. LUMOback can also distinguish time spent in the car. The posture sensor will retail nationwide for $149.95; is still currently iOS-only but LUMOback’s website says Android compatibility is coming. Your dad will never get to tell you to sit up straight again.

Once considered a likely candidate for Intel’s CEO job, Dadi Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group (shown above in 2010), is leaving the company. Perlmutter (shown above) is leaving the company of his own accord, said Chuck Mulloy, an Intel spokesman. His last day will be Feb. 20 of next year. “He’s looking forward to pursuing other opportunities,” Mulloy said. “We’re happy for him personally.” Perlmutter was considered a top candidate to replace former CEO Paul Otellini, but the position went to another internal candidate, Brian Krzanich, formerly chief operating officer and senior vice president. Renee James, another internal CEO candidate who previously was senior vice president and general manager of software and services, was promoted to president.

Don’t even think about trying to repair or upgrade the Surface Pro 2, because it’s just as tough to crack as the original, . The group, which is known for its device teardowns, gave the a repairability score of one out of 10, same as the first-generation Surface Pro. As with the original, the insides are loaded with adhesive, and iFixit counted more than 90 screws holding everything together. (Apple’s fourth-generation iPad, by comparison, earned two repairability points out of 10.) Breaking into the Surface Pro 2 requires a large heat gun to poke at the adhesive, while preferably inserting special picks to pry everything apart. Microsoft used 52 screws of three different sizes to hold the motherboard down, same as the original Surface. (The motherboard is shown above in an iFixit photo.) The Surface Pro 2’s innards aren’t a major reworking from the first-generation, with the notable exception of Intel’s fourth-generation , except it now has more of a blueish hue.

Samsung Electronics has signed a 10-year supply agreement with Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, to ensure access to all of Corning’s existing and future technologies. The agreement is part of a series of deals between Samsung’s Display unit and Corning. The latter is taking full control of the Samsung Corning Precision Materials joint venture in a deal that’s currently valued at $1.9 billion. Samsung is also investing another $400 million in Corning. Samsung believes that Corning’s technologies will become increasingly important to the consumer electronics industry and it wanted ensure access to those, Corning CEO Wendell Weeks, said during a conference call regarding the deals. Gorilla Glass is used to protect smartphone, tablet and laptop displays from scratches. But the company is also working on a number of other announced and unannounced technologies that prompted Samsung to strengthen product and technology collaborations between the two companies, according to Weeks.

A new ARM architecture for embedded chips could boost the power and precision of systems used in a variety of products, including car brakes, medical devices and factory systems. The ARMv8-R architecture, announced on Wednesday, will let companies make embedded chips that are faster and more power-efficient, according to ARM. The need for faster chips is essential as small electronic devices in hospitals, vehicles, factories, and even casinos take on multimedia, wireless communication and other tasks. The chips based on this new architecture will be able to automate more operations and handle more advanced communication features, according to ARM.

Vulnerabilities in the management interfaces of some wireless router and network-attached storage products from Netgear expose the devices to remote attacks that could result in their complete compromise, researchers warn. The latest hardware revision of Netgear’s N600 Wireless Dual-Band Gigabit Router, known as WNDR3700v4 and shown above, has several vulnerabilities that allow attackers to bypass authentication on the router’s Web-based interface, according to Zachary Cutlip, a researcher with security consultancy firm Tactical Network Solutions. . “But not only that, authentication remains disabled across reboots. And, of course, if remote administration is turned on, this works from the frickin’ Internet.” That opens the door to many attack possibilities. For example, an attacker could configure the router to use a malicious DNS (Domain Name System) server, which would allow the attacker to redirect users to malicious websites or set up port forwarding rules to expose internal network services to the Internet.

LG Electronics’ new smartphone based on Firefox OS, the Fireweb, offers slightly better hardware specs than competing products. Firefox OS is built around applications written in HTML5. Mozilla Foundation is pitching it as a better option for low-end smartphones, and devices running it will compete head-to-head with cheap Android smartphones and with devices from other platforms such as Nokia’s Asha. The smartphone has a 4-inch display with a 480 x 320 pixel resolution and is powered by a 1GHz chip from Qualcomm. It also has 2GB of storage and a 5-megapixel camera. That compares to the ZTE Open and to Alcatel One Touch’s Fire, both of which have 3.5-inch screens and 3.2-megapixel cameras. The phone will come with version 1.1 of Firefox OS, which Mozilla launched earlier this month. The upgrade improves application load times and has smoother scrolling, Mozilla said at the time. It also includes new features such as MMS messaging and enhancements to email, contacts management and calendar.

Will the move help Gear become a viable part of the mobile market. (Hint: probably not.)

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to suspend a major data sharing agreement with the U.S. following the ongoing scandal over alleged surveillance from the U.S. National Security Agency. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) narrowly adopted a resolution to suspend the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program (TFTP) with 280 votes in favor and 254 against. The TFTP agreement allows the U.S. Treasury to access some data stored in Europe by international bank transfer company Swift. But allegations that the NSA had spied on this data without going through legal channels has enraged many MEPs. These allegations are based on documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. According to the documents, Swift is included in an NSA training manual for new agents on how to target the private computer network.

A U.S. appeals court has ruled that police must obtain a warrant prior to using a GPS device to track a vehicle, deciding on an unaddressed issue in an earlier Supreme Court order. The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit on Tuesday is considered a victory by privacy groups as a number of courts in the country grapple with the legal and privacy implications of using mobile phone location information and GPS in investigations by law enforcement. In the case, United States v. Katzin, the government used a GPS device attached to the exterior of the van of Harry Katzin, one of the suspects in the burglaries of several pharmacies, to track his movements and those of his two brothers as they drove from one pharmacy to another. Police eventually arrested them. A District Court upheld the claim of the Katzin brothers that the government had violated their Fourth Amendment rights by attaching the GPS tracking device without a warrant. The government, which had contended that a warrant was not required for use of the GPS device, appealed the ruling.

Apple’s move to offer its latest desktop operating system, OS X Mavericks, for free isn’t going to affect the Linux operating system at all, its creator Linus Torvalds said. as of Tuesday is entirely different from Linux’ philosophy, he said. In fact, one of the reasons Torvalds uses the term open source instead of free software because there is a difference between open and free, he said. While Apple’s Mavericks update might be free it is not open source and people still need expensive hardware to use the OS, he said. “The fact that Apple gives the OS away is completely irrelevant,” Torvalds said. “I don’t think that it impacts Linux at all.” Torvalds is not thinking of retiring at all, he told the audience when asked what needed to happen for him to retire. “It needs to get not interesting and that hasn’t happened yet,” he said. But he would probably stop if he gets the feeling that he can’t code anymore or the doctor tells him to quit.

This is an update of a browser extension I last wrote about a couple years back. It's too good not to revisit every so often. Just the other day, this happened: After writing a fairly lengthy post in a browser-based blog tool, I hit the Backspace key to delete something--but because my cursor wasn't inside the text field at the time, Chrome interpreted that as the keyboard shortcut for "back." In other words, back to the previous page. A big chunk of my unsaved work: gone. Crud.  after completing a Web form, and your browser crashes, or the server times out, or your Internet connection croaks. Whatever the case, it means you just wasted a bunch of time and lost a bunch of work.

The U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has allowed Yahoo’s counsel to review declassified documents from a 2008 dispute over data disclosure, after the company said the public release of documents redacted by the government could lead to its role being misunderstood. The counsel for Yahoo may review the “redacted, formally declassified” versions of documents submitted to the court, Judge Reggie B. Walton of the FISC wrote in a ruling on Tuesday. It is not clear what are the changes Yahoo may be allowed to make in the redacted documents. Yahoo had asked the FISC in July to order the release of a secret order in a 2008 surveillance dispute, to show that it strongly resisted government orders. Disclosure of the documents of the 2008 dispute would show that it objected at every stage of the proceedings, but these objections were overruled and a stay denied, it said.

, most tech observers believed calling the new tablet "Surface with Windows RT" was a bad idea. Not only did it sound terrible, but it all but guaranteed to confuse consumers used to dealing with just one flavor of Windows. Microsoft mercifully started calling the tablet Surface RT, as did everyone else. Even so, Surface RT was still stuck with a fundamental problem. It offered a version of Windows 8 that looked like Windows 8, but wasn't. Unlike its x86-based cousin, Windows RT shipped with a handicapped desktop that could only run Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office and do little else. Microsoft is finally making moves to rectify what it should have done in the first place: Remove or at least downplay the existence of the desktop on Windows RT. . But it appears Microsoft is going even further than that. The original Surface RT, which is still being sold, is now simply called Surface.

Tougher taxation of providers of online services will be on the agenda when European Union leaders meet to discuss the digital economy for the first time on Thursday. Leaders will also discuss the creation of a so-called digital single market with no barriers to e-commerce or the delivery of online services, and with the same rights for residents of all E.U. member states. Reform of the telecoms sector and data privacy laws are also likely to come up. “We need to build this digital single market in a manner that is consistent with our European values. That includes making sure that those who operate in the online world do not escape from fair taxation,” said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in a statement. To that end, the Commission announced on Tuesday that it was setting up a high-level working group to examine taxation across the digital sector. According to the Commission this sector is particularly rife with tax avoidance.

A gruesome video that was recently noticed on Facebook and allowed by the company was removed Tuesday, as the social network looks to strengthen its policies around the posting of graphic content. On Monday, a pointed to a video of a beheading that had been posted some time ago to Facebook’s site. Although it was extremely graphic, Facebook allowed the video to stay up, in keeping with its mission to be a platform for free expression, and because the video was deemed to condemn the act rather than celebrate it. But late Tuesday afternoon, Facebook removed the video. It was taken down as part of a larger company effort to strengthen its policies around the posting of graphic content involving videos and images. The just-announced effort, developed over the last 24 hours, is in its early stages.
