Microsoft has discovered an unusually stealthy Trojan capable of deleting files it downloads in order to keep them away from forensics investigators and researchers. The Trojan downloader, , is the latest example of how malware writers are using sophisticated techniques to protect their own trade secrets. The Trojan essentially makes downloaded component files irrecoverable, so they cannot be isolated and analyzed. "During analysis of the downloader, we may not easily find any downloaded component files on the system," Jonathan San Jose, a member of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center, . "Even when using file recovery tools, we may see somewhat suspicious deleted file names but we may be unable to recover the correct content of the file." Microsoft managed to grab some components as they were being downloaded from a remote server. The malware's two purposes was to infect executable files in removable drives, and to unleash a password stealer to snatch credentials from email accounts, Windows Messenger/Live Messenger, Gmail Notifier, Google Desktop, and Google Talk.,
Google co-founder for more than two years. Yet until this week, we didn't know even the most basic facts about the platform. in some locales. Here's what we've learned and what it all means.
Ask any cybersecurity specialist what their biggest challenge is, and you will get a variety of answers -- ranging from strengthening network security, to managing internal threats, to protecting against cyber espionage. But you may be surprised to learn that the unanimous pick for the biggest challenge cybersecurity professionals face is simply getting the funding necessary to carry out a security program. There are resources and technical support available on how to deal with the never-ending list of threats that arise daily; and we have plenty of opportunities to learn and digest security best practices. However, little information or guidance is available to prepare one for the dreaded budget discussion when new or continued funding is necessary to maintain a strong cybersecurity posture. Having established cybersecurity programs in two government organizations, the U.S. National Park Service, and now at Los Angeles World Airports, I have experienced a full range of discussions with a variety of financial teams. In all cases, good communication was the critical ingredient for success and resulted in the necessary funding, over a period of years, to establish and maintain a workable security program.
Yahoo is giving itself a bit of a makeover. Earlier this week, it launched two new mobile apps for email and weather; now it's ditching numerous longstanding products, including Deals and SMS Alerts, in an attempt to sharpen its focus, the company announced Friday. Effective April 30, the following products will be no more: Upcoming, an event discovery service; Deals, for finding bargains, coupons and retail sales; SMS Alerts, which lets users stay up-to-date on a slew of topics; Kids, which features games and educational resources; and Yahoo's Mail and Messenger apps for feature phones. Also, as of June 3, the older versions of Yahoo Mail, including Yahoo Mail Classic, will no longer be available, the company said. In their stead, users can switch to Yahoo's new Mail system, "which is fast and easier to use," Yahoo said.
in selling parts of its x86 server business to Lenovo may bring major changes to the global market. is the third-largest seller of x86 servers by factory revenue, with 15.7 percent of the global market in 2012, according to IDC. That represents $5.6 billion for a company that earned $104.5 billion in revenue last year. IBM's share of the x86 server segment has declined over the last several years. In 2010, it had 17.4 percent of the market and $5.5 billion in revenue. By divesting at least part of its x86 server line, IBM gains additional investment dollars that it can spend on its higher margin efforts, especially its analytics and business intelligence, putting more pressure on rivals in these areas.
Microsoft has confirmed that smaller Windows 8 tablets will come to market in the near future. These will fill a gap in the Windows ecosystem and boost demand for Windows 8 by addressing key downsides to the early Surface tablets. . If one thing has hampered the success of Windows 8 tablets, it's price. The Surface RT is an impressive piece of hardware and a worthy tablet competitor, but it costs the same $500 as the entry-level model of the extremely popular iPad—and nearly double the price of the Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9 HD. Starting at $900, the 10.6-inch Surface Pro is astronomical for a tablet. Even though it’s really a tablet-ultrabook hybrid of sorts, it is perceived as a tablet.
If you have a friend who communicates only by text—but your fingers fumble at phone keyboards—MobiTexter could be the answer. This service works with an app on your Android phone to let you text from the comfort of your computer browser. Once you install the app on your Android phone, you register your Google account with it, then head over to your PC. From your browser, MobiTexter asks for access to your Google account, including your contacts. After you grant it permission, the site links you right to the main texting tools.MobiTexter's Web interface is basic, but serviceable. It automatically pulls in your most recent text message conversations, which are displayed in a list on the left side of the page. On the right, you have fields for entering new individual or group texts. Like rival DeskSMS, MobiTexter limits you to 160 characters per message, and displays incoming messages in small pop-up windows. And while it does display messages in conversation threads, it doesn't automatically add incoming messages to those threads, which is unfortunate. It makes it harder to reply naturally when the message to which you're replying doesn't show up in the conversation view.I also wish that MobiTexter supported MMS, so you could send pictures and videos. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Still, MobiTexter is free and is a reliable way to send and receive basic texts on your computer. The Download button on the Product Information page takes you to the vendor's site, where you can use the latest version of this Web-based software after installing the Android app.
Mobile users in North America are hanging up and using email, texting, or social networking at a rapid pace, according to a survey by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Postpaid subscribers, who pay a regular bill for mobile service at the end of each month, spent an average of 673 minutes per month talking on the phone in the year as of June 30, 2012. That was down from 714 minutes per month a year earlier, while those same subscribers' monthly data use grew from 548MB to 694MB, according to a PwC survey of North American mobile operators released on Friday. Cost-conscious consumers finally joining the mobile revolution is probably one reason for the fall in talk minutes, PwC said, but data services are definitely on the rise. Customers using new, faster networks are consuming 700 percent more data than the average subscriber. The average user of these so-called mobile broadband networks used about 4.8GB of data per month as of June 2012, up from about 3.6GB the previous June.
on Wednesday, including Gmail and Drive. The problem, which lasted for about three hours on Wednesday morning, occurred when the main user-authentication system for Google applications was misconfigured. The improper configuration, introduced on Tuesday, caused log-in requests to be funneled to a small number of servers, which in turn ran out of capacity, and the overload caused them to malfunction.
The once-hot netbook may have been decimated by the arrival of tablets, but inexpensive, lightweight laptops are showing staying power. The latest iteration in that category is Chromebooks, laptops with Google’s Chrome OS, which is seen as a lightweight OS alternative to Windows for users who do most of their computing on the Web. There is substantial backing for Chromebooks with companies like Google, Lenovo, Samsung, Hewlett-Packard and Acer offering models with different screen sizes and hardware. A first wave of Chromebooks released in 2011 from Samsung and Acer failed to catch on, but a new wave that went on sale late last year have better hardware and a more refined OS. Typical features include 100GB of Google Cloud storage, Wi-Fi, webcams, and in some models, 3G connectivity. However, IDC suggested that early sales of Chromebooks have been weak, and it remains to be seen if they will fill the void left by netbooks. Acer’s Chromebook C7 The $200 Acer Chromebook C7 is the cheapest Chrome OS laptop available. It has an 11.6-inch screen and a 320GB hard drive, while other models have 16GB of local solid-state storage. One disappointment is the three-and-a-half hours of battery life, while more expensive models offer up to six-and-a-half hours. The C7 has an Intel Celeron dual-core processor running at 1.1GHz, 2GB of memory and an HDMI port. Like a majority of other Chromebooks, the screen displays images at a resolution of 1366 by 768. Acer maintains the C7 has sold better than expected, and has said it will come out with more Chromebook models in the future.
