The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and a consortium of top semiconductor companies will hand out $194 million to universities for research that addresses the physical limitations of semiconductors and chips. The funding is part of the Starnet program, which will support research conducted primarily at six universities—the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Notre Dame, University of California at Los Angeles and University of California at Berkeley—over a five-year period, according to Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), a research consortium focused on university chip research. SRC is backed by companies such as IBM, Intel, Micron, Globalfoundries, and Texas Instruments. The research will focus on transistors, nanomaterials, quantum computing, scalable memory, and circuits. A goal is for the industry to be ready to move into a new era of computing with smaller circuits that are energy efficient and practical to manufacture. Another goal is to create scalable computing architectures with new forms of chips, memory and interconnects. The research is also intended to protect U.S. security interests, while making the country a leader in semiconductors, DARPA and SRC said in a statement. Slicetige-T is a fairly new program, but you wouldn't guess it from the interface. Looking like something you might have used ten years ago, Slicetige-T takes some getting used to. The program does include a wizard that takes you through the important steps, but when it comes to using the different tools, you'll have to figure these out for yourself. You can start by either uploading a cover image of your own, creating a gradient or a pattern, or by using one of the templates that come with the full version of Slicetige-T. You can move the header around to find the perfect position or resize it to fit the header area. After choosing the background, you can start adding goodies such as social buttons, text and QR codes. The social button interface is, again, somewhat hard to understand, but after giving it some time, you can create buttons for anything from Facebook, Pinterest and Google+ to Tumblr, deviantArt, and pretty much anything you can think of. If you watch a YouTube video explaining how to edit in Photoshop, write in Word, or do anything else in a program, that video was very likely created with Camtasia Record, the original core function of Camtasia Studio. Capturing and showing screen-based activity, such as cursor movement, menu choices, and other interface interactions remains quite straightforward. Click the Record button, and everything you do on your computer monitor is recorded, until you click the Stop button. The results are quite smooth, even when capturing complex on-screen media. That's because Camtasia's new capture engine is optimized for high-definition video, and can now record at 30 frames per second. (Version 7 had a tendency to slow down to 5-10 frames per second.)
